A recessive mutation to the keratin gene KRT71 is responsible for the growth of a curly rather than straight coat in certain dogs. The variant analysed in this test, designated as c^1, is found in the Portuguese Water Dog. A related variant, c^2, has been observed in the Bichon Frise, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Curly-coated Retriever, Irish Terrier, Lagotto Romagnolo and Spanish Water Dog.
Caratteristiche cliniche
I cani affetti hanno un pelo riccio invece di un pelo ondulato. Però per arricciarsi il mantello deve innanzitutto essere di una lunghezza sufficiente.
I cani portatori delle mutazioni aggiuntive per il pelo lungo (FGF5) e il furnishing (RSPO2) avranno furnishing e matelli morbidi lunghi, piuttosto che quelli ispidi. Quando i cani sono portatori di varianti sia in FGF5 che in KRT71, si vede un pelo lungo e riccio.
Se sono presenti tutte e tre le mutazioni (KRT71, FG5 e RSPO2), il fenotipo è lungo e riccio con furnishing.
