La porfiria intermittente acuta (AIP) è classificata come porfiria epatica. È un disturbo della sintesi dell’eme. I gatti con AIP hanno la metà della normale attività dell’idrossimetilbilano (HMB) sintasi, un enzima necessario nella via di sintesi dell’eme.
Caratteristiche cliniche
In cats with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), Erythrodontia (brown discoloured teeth) is an important phenotypic feature. Cats with autosomal dominant AIP presented with erythrodontia, reddish-brown urine and mild changes in erythrocytes. The symptoms will develop at a young age. Within a few hours to a maximum of several weeks after birth, the characteristics that go with these genetic effects will become visible.

I sintomi sono molto simili a quelli della porfiria eritropoietica congenita (CEP, OMIA 001175-9685). Ci sono cinque diverse mutazioni conosciute che possono causare porfiria intermittente acuta. I test sono disponibili per tutte queste mutazioni.
