La degenerazione spugnosa con atassia cerebellare è un grave disturbo neurologico che causa la degenerazione del cervelletto e del tronco encefalico. La malattia è progressiva e alla fine richiede l’eutanasia. Questa variante della malattia, nota come SDCA1, è causata da una mutazione recessiva del gene KCNJ10.
La variante della malattia analizzata in questo test si verifica nel Cane da Pastore Belga (Malinois belga) e varianti simili sono state osservate nel Jack Russell Terrier e nel Parson Russel Terrier.
Caratteristiche cliniche
Affected puppies present initial symptoms of SDCA1 between 4 to 9 weeks of age. The primary symptom is ataxia (loss of coordination), with a wide-limbed gait, staggering, trembling and loss of balance. Other symptoms can include impaired eye coordination or difficulty stabilizing gaze after rapid head movements, muscle spasms following exercise or stress, and seizures. As symptoms progress, euthanasia on humane grounds is typically elected for by the age of 17 weeks.
