Informazioni generali
The gene for LDL receptor related protein 8 (LRP8) plays an essential role in the activity of the hippocampus, an area of the brain closely involved with memory and spatial orientation. In homing pigeons, a mutation to LRP8 (designated Q202H) has been observed which is believed to improve the functioning of the hippocampus, giving the bird increased navigational ability and homing performance. This makes the mutation a useful performance marker.
Caratteristiche cliniche
The majority of homing pigeons are affected by the Q202H mutation, improving the function of the hippocampus and therefore homing performance.
